Nelle costruzioni passate la hindī moderna condivide con altre lingue indo-arie (es. pañjābī, marāṭhī, gujarātī) il tipo morfosintattico conosciuto come ergativo o assolutivo-ergativo. Se è vero però che gli studi focalizzati sulla possibile genesi dell'ergatività in indo-ario, concentrati quindi soprattutto sull'antico indo-ario e sul medio-indo-ario, sono molti, è altrettanto vero che i linguisti che si sono occupati dell'evoluzione dei sistemi assolutivo-ergativi a partire dall'ultima fase del medio-indo-ario, l'apabhraṃśa, fino alle lingue indo-arie moderne appaiono come figure isolate nel panorama linguistico.
Il presente volume, adottando il quadro di riferimento tipologico-funzionale coniugato con l'analisi empirica circostanziata dei fenomeni sintattici legati all'espressione dell'ergatività, cerca di far luce sulle modalità attraverso le quali nella hindī si è giunti alla completa 'estensione' della posposizione per l'ergativo negli enunciati al passato. È così delineato il processo di diffusione e generalizzazione della marca di caso analitica ne originatosi soltanto a partire dal XVII secolo e strettamente correlato alle dinamiche di conservazione del sistema assolutivo-ergativo originario dell'indo-ario, dal quale sarebbe appunto derivato quello tuttora attestato in alcune lingue neo-indo-arie. I risultati conseguiti pongono bene in evidenza che nel corso di tale processo non sono intervenuti solamente criteri di natura morfosintattica, ma anche altri fattori, più precisamente di natura semantica e/o pragmatica, e verificano inoltre, in maniera critica, i parametri che nella tipologia funzionale sono stati utilizzati per definire l'ergatività sulla base di altre tradizioni linguistiche. Sociolinguistic research, which aims at determining how code-switching creates social meaning and which discourse functions it serves, represents an important field of code-switching research.While all of South Asia is characterised by bi- or multilingualism, there is probably no multilingual society more complex than the Indian one. Apart from the two national languages English and Hindi, more than 100 distinct languages are spoken in the country, with permanent code-switching between several of these languages being an established and accepted practice.This book discusses the different sociolinguistic code-switching theories and their applicability to the Indian context. Diana Dimitrova studies the representation of gender and religion in Hindi drama from its beginnings in the second half of the nineteenth century until the 1960s - the period when urban proscenium Hindi theatre, which originated under Western influence, matured and thrived.
Her focus is on how different religious and mythological models pertaining to women have been reworked in Hindi drama and whether the seven representative dramatists discussed in this book present conservative or liberating Hindu images of the feminine. She examines how the intersections of gender, religion, and ideology account for the creation of the canon of modern Hindi drama, specifically the assertion of a conservative interpretation of orthodox Hindu images of the feminine as well as the exclusion of dramatists who introduce innovative liberating images of the feminine.
The overt reason for the negative attitude toward this innovative representation of gender is that it is perceived as "Western" and thus "Non-Indian." By contrast, the author's analysis of Hindu mythology, religion, and theatre history reveals that the new interpretation of gender is deeply embedded in Hindu tradition and is thus both Hindu Indian and modernist Western in character. A lovelorn concubine, a young woman on the verge of marriage, a married woman in love with another, a woman in love with God. This collection presents unusual and lesser-known love lyrics from the Indo-Muslim literary tradition that have given voice over the last five centuries to the erotic and the spiritual, the mundane and the sublime.
Translated from early Punjabi as well as Dakani and Lakhnavi Urdu, these poems were authored by men but narrated in the feminine voice. Largely forgotten today, the poets hailed from widely divergent milieux—from the royal courts of the Deccan, the urban sophistication of Lucknow to rural Punjab—bringing a remarkable versatility to their poetry.
Taken together, these marginalized poems trace a history of the aesthetics of love that has roots simultaneously in the mystical poetry of Sufism and in Bhakti devotionalism. This collection presents unusual and lesser-known love lyrics from the Indo-Muslim literary tradition that have given voice over the last five centuries to the erotic and the spiritual, the mundane and the sublime.
Translated from early Punjabi as well as Dakani and Lakhnavi Urdu, these poems were authored by men but narrated in the feminine voice. Largely forgotten today, the poets hailed from widely divergent milieux—from the royal courts of the Deccan, the urban sophistication of Lucknow to rural Punjab—bringing a remarkable versatility to their poetry.
Taken together, these marginalized poems trace a history of the aesthetics of love that has roots simultaneously in the mystical poetry of Sufism and in Bhakti devotionalism. This book presents the structure of Hindi keeping in view the sociolinguistic context of language use. It includes descriptions of sounds, devices of word formation, rules of phrase and sentence construction and conventions of language use in spoken and written texts incorporating the insights gained by application of recent linguistic theories. The account presented here, however, is free from abstruse technical vocabulary and modes of presentation that aim at justifying a particular linguistic model. This volume is primarily designed as a source of reference for linguists and educators who want to be better informed about the forms and functions of Hindi, and a resource for students and teachers of Hindi.
Hindi, the official language of the Republic of India, is the second most widely spoken language with approximately three hundred and fifty million speakers. In its diasporic contexts, it is spoken in Africa, Australia, Europe, Fiji, Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States. An Indo-European language by genetic affiliation, Hindi shares many characteristics with Austro-Asiatic, Dravidian, and Sino-Tibetan languages of the subcontinent.
